Our Recent training opportunities

We are committed to supporting access to good jobs and careers in the film sector. Our education and skills programmes with local schools and colleges seek to make the industry more accessible, inclusive and diverse by building awareness of job roles and careers in films and creating high quality training pathways into good jobs and careers.

Our schools programmes include:

  • Access to industry-led CPD for teachers, practical workshops for pupils and career pathway advice to prepare students for future opportunities in film.
  • An interactive annual ‘Skills for Screen’ careers event open to all schools across the borough, helping to demystify routes into the film sector for students with industry partners and professionals.
  • A ‘Film Enterprise Competition’ delivered in conjunction with LBBD’s Cultural Education Partnership, currently running across 9 schools in Barking and Dagenham, allowing students to create their own scripts, storyboards, and pitches. Chosen by a panel of industry experts, the two winning schools will work with a professional crew to bring their films to life, to be later screened in the borough.

Our training programmes currently include:

  • Set Ready Bootcamps for Location Marshalls & Production Runners: preparing people for working on set or out on location. From set etiquette to radios and how to read a call sheet, we’ve got all the basics covered in our 2-day programme. To date we have secured over 60 paid placements for alumni on live productions.
  • Illumination electric and lighting training: hosted in partnership with MBS equipment, this is a bespoke course delivered over a weekend, focusing on the core skills required to work as a Set Lighting Technician, Console Operator and Gaffer.

We are seeking trusted training partners to work collaboratively with us to grow this training offer and meet the skills and diversity gaps of the film industry. Watch this space for more information!

It’s an exciting time for the film and tv industry. Studios and productions are working flat out to service viewers demands. But such growth produced it’s own set of challenges – skills gaps and supply shortages – so we’re here, mobilised to educate, retrain, upskill and promote – and to have a set ready workforce within the next few years.

As the studio is developed and launched, we will be collaborating with local employers and education and training providers, as well as sector development specialists across the UK, to ensure that we:

  • Connect with talent across the borough
  • Create accessible and structured pathways into screen industry careers
  • Maximise opportunities for career progression and sustainability
  • Include access points for those who are returning to work or looking to retrain or diversify
  • Create an environment of collaboration and co-design with the local community
