careers in film - an insiders perspective

Last week, the Film Barking and Dagenham team, and Inspiring Futures: The Barking and Dagenham Cultural Education Partnership, hosted an event for over 50 local teachers, governors and education partners at Dagenham East.

The event also featured an insightful presentation from ‘Dagenham born and bred’ Carey Fitzgerald, managing director of BOFTV (Business of Film & Television), who spoke about the various routes into the industry and why now is a great time to explore film and tv as a career.

As part of the “Make It Here” programme, we will be working closely with Inspiring Futures over the coming months to explore the ways in which Film & Tv skills can be incorporated into the curriculum.

“It was fabulous to meet everyone from all areas of education in the Borough and to be able to let them know, from an industry point of view, the sheer volume of job and career opportunities that the Eastbrook Film Studios will create for their students. The whole area will be transformed and will bring a vast amount of training, jobs, and career opportunities to Barking and Dagenham for many generations to come”.

Martin Russell, Culture and Wellbeing Lead for Education, stated,

“Having the chance to build and embed engagement and programming that supports the curriculum at such a formative stage of the film studios will provide a sustainable relationship between schools and the industry for many years to come and ensure skills, knowledge and access are a true strength of Barking and Dagenham”.

Sector Lead for Film, Anna Wilson, one of the event organisers, concluded

“We’re delighted to have launched the ‘Make It Here’ programme with such a well-attended event, bringing together education and industry leaders to help shape opportunities for the borough. Our vision to create learning and career pathways into the screen industries begins with students, teachers and parents. Such lively and engaged conversations can only bode well for the future”.
